Combustion and emission characteristics of a 2.2L common-rail diesel engine fueled with jatropha oil, soybean oil, and diesel fuel at various EGR-rates

Jatropha Oil as an Alternative Fuel for Modern Diesel Engines

An effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) is to use rurally produced straight jatropha oil as a substitute for diesel fuel. However, the different physical and chemical properties of straight vegetable oils (SVOs) require a customized setup of the combustion engine, particularly of the injection timing and quantity. Therefore, this study demonstrates the differences in the injection and combustion processes of jatropha oil compared to diesel fuel, particularly in terms of its compatibility with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

2nd Generation Pure Plant Oils from Decentralized Oil Mills

Pure plant oil was closest to the diesel engine at the time of its invention. It is well known that Rudolf Diesel himself displayed a diesel engine running on groundnut oil at the Paris world exhibition in 1896. Up to now the quality of fuel and combustion engines increased constantly. Sustainable plant oils are an affordable, safe, social and environmentally friendly fuel supply, especially at countries of its origin, not only for generators and tractors but also for transport vehicles.

2nd Generation Pure Plant Oil in Flex Fuel Engines

Since 2001 four oil spills from tank ships threatened Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, killing over 10.000 marine iguanas and other species. As consequence to the Ecuadorian „Zero Fossil Fuel on Galapagos Island Initiative“ 100 % renewable energy hybrid systems with photovoltaic, wind, battery and pure plant oil (ppo) generators for frequency control/grid balancing have been installed 2010 on Floreana Island.

Pure Jatropha Oil for Power Generation on Floreana Island/Galapagos

In the small country of Ecuador, all environmental risks of the production and consumption of fossil fuels can be observed by damages through oil exploration in the amazonite rainforest and two tank ship accidents close by Galapagos Islands. Now Ecuador plans to replace all environmentally dangerous diesel generators from all four inhabited Galapagos Islands by a hybrid system using 100 % renewable energy for electricity production. Since 2010 a hybrid system of two Jatropha oil generators and a photovoltaic plant is successfully providing electricity from renewable energy for inhabitants and tourists of Floreana Island.

Biokraftstoff: Quo vadis?

2nd Veg Oil Project

When used at a local level, Pure Plant Oil (OOP), has a potential for the most comprehensive benefits of all engine biofuels. However, like any other fuels, it will soon have to comply with severe emission standards, including a drastic decrease of particle emissions.
